  1. A. Protein content of the meals was estimated using Nutritionist Pro version 2.0: (First data bank: Hearst Corporation, San Bruno, CA); Nitrogen in food was calculated using 5.53 g protein/g N as a conversion factor [14]; *Nitrogen in food in the LoBAG post diet also was calculated using the conventional 6.25 g protein/g N as a conversion factor, since the majority of the additional protein in the diet was animal protein (muscle); body water was calculated according to Watson [15]; total urine nitrogen was determine by summing the urine urea nitrogen concentration,% nitrogen in creatinine (37%) and% nitrogen in uric acid (33%). Fecal nitrogen was measured directly. The contribution of nitrogen from excreted ammonia, amino acids and hippuric acid was added as indicated in methods.
  2. B. Protein content of the meals was determined directly; body water was determined directly; total urine nitrogen and fecal nitrogen were determined directly (see text for methods).
  3. % Metabolized was calculated as g N (Metabolized/g N Ingested) × (100).
