- A. Protein content of the meals was estimated using Nutritionist Pro version 2.0: (First data bank: Hearst Corporation, San Bruno, CA); Nitrogen in food was calculated using 5.53 g protein/g N as a conversion factor [14]; *Nitrogen in food in the LoBAG post diet also was calculated using the conventional 6.25 g protein/g N as a conversion factor, since the majority of the additional protein in the diet was animal protein (muscle); body water was calculated according to Watson [15]; total urine nitrogen was determine by summing the urine urea nitrogen concentration,% nitrogen in creatinine (37%) and% nitrogen in uric acid (33%). Fecal nitrogen was measured directly. The contribution of nitrogen from excreted ammonia, amino acids and hippuric acid was added as indicated in methods.
- B. Protein content of the meals was determined directly; body water was determined directly; total urine nitrogen and fecal nitrogen were determined directly (see text for methods).
- % Metabolized was calculated as g N (Metabolized/g N Ingested) × (100).
