Lipid droplet formation in rat insulin-producing RINm5F cells after incubation with saturated and monounsaturated NEFAs of increasing chain length. RINm5F cells were incubated with different medium- and long-chain saturated and monounsaturated NEFAs (100 μM) for 24 h. Thereafter cells were fixed and stained with Oil Red O. Lipid droplet formation was analyzed by fluorescence microscopy and quantified using the software xcellence rt. Data are means ± SEM of n = 3. ***p < 0.001 compared to control cells (Dunnett’s Multiple Comparison Test). #p < 0.05, ##p < 0.01, ###p < 0.005 compared to saturated NEFA with the same chain length (Student’s t-test)
