Schematic of experimental design for the two weight loss intervention studies. For Study 1, overweight women were provided with a controlled weight loss intervention (low-energy diet) until they achieved BMI <25 kg/m2, at which time insulin sensitivity was assessed and compared to a group of never overweight women of BMI < 25 kg/m2. For Study 2, overweight women were provided with a controlled weight loss intervention (diet +/− exercise) until they achieved BMI <25 kg/m2, at which time insulin sensitivity was assessed (“baseline”). Women were evaluated for change in body composition after 1 year.
